Walking labyrinths are intended to calm and relax the mind, and are used as a tool for healing and personal growth. Labyrinths have been used for centuries by different cultures and religions during prayer and meditation. In a similar manner, utilizing a finger labyrinth in your spiritual practice can help us to practice mindfulness, calm anxious feelings, and can help us to overcome difficult situations that we may be facing. They help to restore emotional and spiritual well-being. Similar to a walking labyrinth, these finger labyrinths can become a part of your spiritual practice while you set your intentions or pose a question for your walk. You can repeat an affirmation or mantra during your "walk" as well.
A labyrinth is not a maze. There are no dead ends in a labyrinth. Following the path is a way to take time with yourself...to find peace of mind, serenity and relaxation. It can be a way to solve problems.
How to use your finger labyrinth:
Relax and take a few deep breaths. Concentrate on your breath as you begin the journey and throughout the labyrinth.
Place your pointer finger from your non-dominant hand at the entrance of the labyrinth. If this is not comfortable for you, you can use your primary hand until you are comfortable with using your other finger.
Begin by slowly tracing the labyrinth. Focus on following the path, and keep your mind clear of any other thoughts, solely focusing on the path ahead.
Take deep breaths as you are “walking” the labyrinth. Once you reach the center of the labyrinth, take a moment to pause and reflect. This is a great time to pray and relax.
Retrace your steps as you slowly follow the path out of the labyrinth. Move slowly throughout the journey to reflect, quiet the mind, and restore your mind-body and soul. Give gratitude and thanks at the end of your walk for what you may have just experienced.
